The Begonia ‘Fannie Moser’ is a well-loved and visually dramatic hybrid, classified as an Erect-Stemmed, or Cane-type, Begonia.1 This cultivar is highly valued for its striking coloration, vigorous growth, and hardiness compared to some other Begonia types.

Key Characteristics

  • Foliage: The leaves are large, often angel-wing shaped (as is typical for many cane begonias), and display one of the most remarkable color patterns in the genus.2 The mature leaves are a beautiful deep, rich olive-green and are heavily dusted and spotted with silver or pearly white dots and blotches. The undersides of the leaves and the new growth often display a vibrant deep red or burgundy color, creating a fantastic contrast.

  • Habit: As a cane-type Begonia, it develops thick, upright, bamboo-like stems (canes) that give the plant a substantial, vertical structure.3 It can grow quite tall indoors, often reaching 3 to 4 feet, making it an excellent specimen plant for a floor or pedestal.

  • Flowers: ‘Fannie Moser’ is a free bloomer. It produces lovely, cascading clusters (panicles) of deep pink or coral-colored flowers, typically appearing during the late winter and spring months, adding to its year-round ornamental value.

Optimal Care

Cane Begonias like ‘Fannie Moser’ are generally robust and easier to care for than their rhizomatous or Rex cousins, provided they receive sufficient light:

Care Aspect Requirement Notes
Light Bright, Indirect Light Essential for flowering and silver spotting. Too little light leads to leggy growth and reduced flowering. A few hours of very gentle morning sun is beneficial, but avoid harsh midday sun.
Watering Consistent but Moderate Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of the soil are dry. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, as root rot is still a risk if overwatered.
Humidity Average Household It is quite tolerant of typical indoor humidity (30%–40%) but will appreciate higher levels (50%+) for lush growth.
Soil Well-Draining, Airy Mix A standard good-quality potting mix amended with perlite and a bit of bark to ensure aeration works well.
Pruning Necessary Pruning old, woody canes back encourages new, vigorous growth from the base, keeping the plant full and healthy.
  • Live plant along with a plastic pot.
  • Plant height will be 08-12 inches in 6 inches pot.
  • Plant height will be 24-28 inches in 8 inches pot.
  • Plants nature is outdoor/semi shade, less watering.
